remodel / addition

For this major remodel, an existing 1930’s tract home of 1400 square feet was opened up to create an expansive floor plan of family living functions, which form a space from front yard to dining room to kitchen to work space to living room to back yard.  A new 2nd story bedroom volume repeats this front-to-rear line. A hallway and balcony with wood louvers manages the solar light and heat of the southern length of this 2nd story volume. A perimeter of clerestory windows and a thin framing system create a floating expression to the roof plane, which slopes toward the southern solar fuel source for a p.v. array. Natural ventilation, sustainably manufactured finishes and daylighting all contribute to this family’s commitment to their home’s light footprint on the environment.
